Game developer Psyonix has launched Champions Road, an in-game Rocket League event designed to celebrate the title’s RLCS esports ecosystem.
From August 2nd-16th, the event will feature an array of activations for Rocket League players. This includes event challenges, an RLCS World Championship-themed bundle and esports shop discounts.
The Champions Road event was introduced to celebrate the upcoming Rocket League World Championship, the RLCS’ biggest esports event of the year.
The championship has two phases: the Wildcard Stage from August 3rd-6th and the Main Event from August 8th-13th. Throughout its runtime, 24 teams from around the world will compete for a total prize pool of $2.1m (~£1.66m) in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Activations for the Champions Road event include event challenges and rewards, such as a Rocket League World Championship Trophy Topper. The game will also feature two Limited Time Modes and an RLCS-themed bundle for 1,500 Credits. The bundle contains several cosmetics along with the ‘PANDEMONIUM’ by NF Player Anthem, the official 2023 World Championship theme song.
In addition, Psyonix will offer an Esports Shop Discount on Decals, Player Banners and Goal Explosions throughout the event.
Rocket League expanded the esports shop in October 2022 for its 2022-23 RLCS season, allowing esports fans to showcase their favourite team in-game. Available as home and away versions, decals feature a total of 33 teams, including the likes of Team Liquid, G2 Esports and FaZe Clan.
Featured esports teams benefit from the shop’s revenue-sharing scheme, with the organisation’s receiving a 30% cut of the revenue generated from purchases.
Psyonix is not the only game developer to leverage in-game activations to promote its esports events. For instance, VALORANT developer Riot Games frequently creates exclusive weapon skins alongside its esports competitions. Its latest bundle will launch on August 4th, dedicated to VCT Champions in Los Angeles.
